Siding in the woods.
Sudden Valley is the big wooded development wrapped around the south end of Lake Whatcom, a community of homes tucked into heavy second-growth forest. The setting is the appeal and the problem. Most of these houses went up in the 1970s and 80s wearing T1-11 plywood siding or cedar, the exact materials that don't last in deep shade and constant damp. Under that tree cover the walls almost never get direct sun, the ground stays wet, and the original direct-applied siding has been holding moisture against the sheathing for forty years.
So Sudden Valley is rot country, and it's the neighborhood where we lead hardest with the rainscreen. When we pull the old T1-11 or cedar off a house up here, soft OSB and damaged framing are the rule, not the exception, and we document all of it with photos before we repair it. Then it's a new weather barrier, a vented rainscreen so the shaded wall can finally dry from the back, and new cladding, usually fiber cement or engineered wood, that won't feed mold the way the old stuff did. It's the most honest version of this trade: the wall can't dry on its own here, so we build it to.
