Cedar and wood siding,
done with respect for the look.

New cedar shingles, shakes, and bevel siding for homes where the look matters, like Fairhaven and Edgemoor. We use corrosion-resistant fasteners, breathable detailing, and a rainscreen so the wood can dry.

Cedar that matches the house.

There are homes in Bellingham where vinyl would be wrong and everyone knows it. The cedar-shingle and clapboard houses in Fairhaven, the bigger places in Edgemoor off Chuckanut, the older stock in the Lettered Streets and Columbia. For those, we install new western red cedar shingles, shakes, and bevel siding, matching the coursing and exposure of the original so the re-side reads as the same house, just sound again. We respect the historic-district look where it matters.

Wood only lasts here if it can dry, so we put cedar on a rainscreen with a vented gap behind it. We use stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners (cheap fasteners bleed and fail in salt-tinged air near the bay), detail the wall so it breathes, and flash the windows and roof-to-wall joints properly. Cedar is the most maintenance of the materials we install, and we'll tell you that up front, but on the right house it's worth it.

What it actually costs.

Cedar & wood re-side $18,000 to $45,000

Our four-step process.

  1. Walkthrough & match

We look at the existing siding, note the coursing and exposure, and plan a cedar re-side that matches the home's look.

  2. Tear-off & inspection

We pull the old cladding and photograph any soft sheathing or framing before we cover it.

  3. Weather barrier, rainscreen & flashing

New WRB lapped correctly, a vented rainscreen gap, and proper flashing so the wood can dry from the back.

  4. Cedar install & trim

We install the shingles, shakes, or bevel with corrosion-resistant fasteners, match the original exposure, and finish the corners and trim.

Frequently asked questions.

How much does cedar siding cost in Bellingham?

A cedar re-side in Bellingham usually runs $18,000 to $45,000 depending on wall square footage, whether you choose shingle, shake, or bevel, the cedar grade, and how much historic matching the house needs. Cedar costs more than fiber cement or vinyl, and we'll give you a line-item quote.

Does cedar siding hold up in our wet climate?

Cedar holds up here if it can dry, which means a rainscreen and breathable detailing. We install it on a vented gap with corrosion-resistant fasteners. Cedar is the most maintenance of the materials we install, but on a character home it's often the right call.

Can you match the cedar on my historic Fairhaven home?

Yes. We match the coursing, exposure, and shingle or shake style of the original so the re-side reads as the same house. We do a lot of this work in Fairhaven, Edgemoor, and the Lettered Streets, and we respect the historic-district look.
